My partner, Douglas Johnston, and I started our quarterly haircut rituals back in 2010.
As we cannot afford to get a haircut from a professional stylist at a salon, we usually take care of our haircut needs by ourselves. This project explores the possibility of taking a somewhat personal and universal hygienic routine, one which potentially transforms a person physically and emotionally, and situating it as a public social activity. So far we've taken our ritual to: woods in Greenbelt Forest in Staten Island, Prospect Park in Brooklyn and rooftop of our studio in Brooklyn. We went to the beach in New Jersey, but gave up conducting a haircut due to the extreme wind:(
