h(f)olding multiples

H(f)OLDING MULTIPLES is a temporary sleeping pod for a person with a nomadic lifestyle. It consists of two parts: an outdoor chair and a jacket. The outdoor chair would be purchased and installed in public parks and private residences (someone’s backyard, poach, etc…) with or without the premises of hosting a nomadic user. With this infrastructure of “chair” installed all over the world, a person with the jacket travels and transforms both the chair and the jacket to create a shelter for one night.

This project explores options for creating an infrastructure to support nomadic lifestyles. Nomadism is considered degenerate in context of western hegemony, in which sedentary is the dominant lifestyle. As provocation, the project intends to spark dialogue in public sphere by inserting a notion of nomadic lifestyle into public view. It challenges existing cultural hegemony while acknowledging alternative lifestyles; attempts to present alternative views and uses of public objects, spaces, and the nomadism.

By designing both a public object (the chair) and a private object (the jacket) be capable of transforming to work together, the function of the objects expands. Metaphorically, it serves as

A + B = C

A = sedentary, static, hard
B = nomadic, fluid, soft
C = something in between or co-existing

The chair was designed so that it could be flat-packed to reduce the cost of shipping and material waste during the fabrication process. Its Origami-like structure provides creases for folding, and it can be unfolded completely flat. Studies were made with 1/8” thickness) cardboard, using laser-cutter.

The prototype is composed with cardboard laminated with fiberglass and resin to maintain its lightweightness and give more stength to each panels. Acrylic paints were added to resin. For joinery, I used polyester twine. Garment pieceis made with cotton fabric, designed to be a wind-breaker when it’s worn, and a thin membrane when it’s unfolded and tied to a unfolded chair piece.
